Took the political compass test. No big surprises there.
**
Today at a seminar:
Primary advisor: “Jaana, do you notice something weird?”
Me, frantically looking around so I can prove my sharpness: “Huh?” (I never notice anything.)
Advisor: “Isn’t the gender distribution kind of strange?”
Me, looking around and realizing I am the only female among the about 20 people present: “Oh! No, I honestly did not notice.” (I honestly did not.)
Advisor: “It’s getting quite bad again.”
Me: “Yes, I guess it’s kind of sad.”
It would be intriguing to know if I had noticed the weird distribution if I had not known practically all of the people present – if I had thought of them as random samples of scientists, instead of the persons present.
I am sure there are demographics for which there was not even *one exception present too. Ethnicity, I think at least. I cannot think of one that is as represented in general Finnish population as females are, though.
Incidentally, read FSP.

For the first time I think ever I have arrived to a situation where I think I have a genuine research interest. Oh, I have filled out gazillion forms asking for research interests in my life, but so far, I have filled them as if they said, instead ,”some quite interesting stuff these other guys invited me to do with them” or “stuff I think is inherently cool”. Which are very nice things both, but not quite the same. Lately, for the first time, I have had this “I want to understand this even if it takes me my whole life” thing going on in my head.
So, Janka’s Log proudly presents, my research interests:
- medical genetics, specifically
- the analysis of complex phenotypes, specifically
- the genetic and environmental etiology of temperament and mental health, specifically
- the classification, origin, genetic predisposition, and co-phenotypes of psychoses.
Yes, I totally made up the word “co-phenotype”.
